Fire lays are simply different ways to construct a fire depending on weather, dampness of the ground and wood, how long you plan to have it burn and many other variables. Some are better for heat, while others are best for cooking. Some make great signal fires while other make very little smoke. Ultimately, it boils down to what your favorite is so I would recommend trying them all and seeing what works best for you.
