Disinfecting Water with Chlorine Bleach

In this chart we list the appropriate amounts of liquid chlorine or regular liquid bleach such as unscented Clorox to be used for disinfecting either clear filtered water or cloudy questionable water. The amounts listed for clear filtered water can also be used as a long term preservative for water storage.

Makeshift Water Filter

A makeshift water filter can be made by cutting the bottom off of a water or soda bottle, tying a piece of cloth to the opening and filling the bottle with a variety of materials starting with fine and working up to more course. Tying the bottle to a tree or post driven into the ground makes using it easier. Use the cut-off bottle bottom to scoop source water and pour it into the filter. Collect the water in a metal pot, pan or bottle so that it can be boiled for purification.

How We Made A 275 Gallon Water Tower

In this video we are building a quick and easy IBC tote mini water tower to supply water to our gardens in a power down situation. We have well water, so when the power is out our taps don’t work. This will supply us with 275 gallons of water, elevated to 4 feet and located an additional 3-4 feet above our gardens. This should give us plenty of water pressure to attach a hose and water our plants.
