Lemonade is a signature summer drink, but this recipe makes it a year-round favorite! This is a family recipe passed down for years. The special ingredient made this a favorite when resources like sugar were in shorter supply during the depression. Give this recipe a try and let us know what you think!
3 lemons*can substitute 1/2 cup bottled lemon juice
1gallonwater
3/4cupsugar
1/8tspnutmeg
Instructions
Fill container with ½ gallon of water
Roll lemons on counter or table to soften
Cut lemons in half and gently squeeze juice into container
Slice remaining lemon and add to water (you can include the ends or cut off and save for other purposes like lemon zest)
Add sugar and stir until mixed well
Add remaining water
Add nutmeg and stir to incorporate
Cool and serve over ice
*Note: Leaving the lemons in the water will increase the flavor over time. Lemons can be removed once flavor reaches your desired taste and then potentially used to make another batch of lemonade or added to other drinks like iced tea.
