Hot Honey

Hot honey, a combination of honey infused with cayenne and chili peppers, is a versatile condiment that can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. People are using hot honey on pizza, fried chicken, in salad dressings and even on ice cream! As great of a condiment for your foods as this is, did you realize it also has the medicinal properties of its ingredients? This mix is rich in antioxidants and can help in the relief of cold and flu symptoms, help clear your sinuses, improve blood circulation and has the pain-relieving qualities of the capsaicin found in the chili peppers. So go ahead and use this hot honey in new creative ways but remember you can also mix this in with your tea for a boost to your system.

Equipment

  • 1 Double Boiler Pan
  • 1 set measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 Spoon to stir mix in pot
  • 3 ¼ pint sterilized jars and cover *Or other container with cover for storage

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Honey
  • ½ tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • ½ tsp Red Pepper Flakes

Instructions
 

  • Heat water to boiling in the bottom of your double boiler
  • Add honey, cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes together in the top pan of the double boiler
  • Add top pan to bottom of double boiler and stir mix for approximately 10 minutes. You do not want to bring this to a boil or burn the honey in the bottom of the pan.
  • Remove from heat and pour into jars, add lids and allow to cool

*NOTE- This mix will get more spicy the longer it sits with the red pepper flakes so we suggest starting with the listed amount for your first batch.  If you find it isn't spicy enough, try increasing the red pepper flakes by 1/2 tsp at a time.
Some uses for this mix:
Tea: Add a teaspoon of the hot honey to your tea if you have a cold to help clear your sinuses and take advantage of it's antioxidant properties (You may want to strain our the red pepper flakes or use a tea infuser)
