Equipment

  • 1 food processor or blender
  • 1 set measuring spoons
  • 1 bowl/container for serving or storing finished hummus
  • 1 knife or spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 15.5 ounce can chick peas or garbanzo beans
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp peanut butter This replaces the 1/3 cup tahini in our recipe
  • 1/4 cup water - add by the teaspoon if needed only add if mixture is too dry

Instructions

  • Rinse your chick peas well and add to food processor
  • Add cumin, salt, lemon juice and peanut butter
  • Blend on high in food processor until a creamy texture with all chick peas blended well. At this point if your mix is too dry, add water by one teaspoon at a time. Adding too much at a time can make your mixture dry. Add one teaspoon, blend on high and check until texture is smooth and creamy but still somewhat firm.
  • Once you have it blended to the desired consistency, this is where you would add any additional desired ingredients such as roasted red peppers, jalapenos, etc.
  • Put hummus into bowl to server or container for storage.

Notes

This is a great base that you can make into your favorite flavors.  We love it with some smoked paprika sprinkled on top along with some fresh diced chives. It should last up to two weeks in the fridge or can be freeze dried and when stored properly be good up to 10 years.
You can also try substituting sunflower butter or other peanut butter alternatives in the recipe but this may change the flavor and consistency.
We hope this helps you make hummus at home to enjoy with your family and friends!
