Ingredients

  • 20 cups peeled, cored and sliced apples
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup *sugar *if canning increase sugar to 1 cup
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup *lemon juice *ONLY NEEDED IF CANNING

Instructions

  • Core, peel and slice apples. Put into pot and add the 2 tbsp water to prevent sticking; cook over low to medium heat. Cook apples, stirring often, until apples are soft enough to mash. *(Skip this step and do not mash if making pie filling) Mash with a potato masher to desired texture. Add sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg (and lemon if canning) and bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Can be served hot or cold.
*NOTE: I use the same recipe to make my pie filling. The only difference is I cut the apples into slices after peeling and coring and do not mash them.
